I find myself on or near this street again and again. When I first moved to NYC, West 8th street between 5th and 6th avenues was the perfect place to find all kinds of cool, funky, awesome shoes. And other cool things as well. But after the mortgage crisis of 2008 and people’s incomes dropped, and people stopped shopping as much, etc, etc, that little block took a beating. And I saw so many stores go out of business… empty real estate that apparently couldn’t be leased…. it was really sad. But eventually new stores moved in and a handful of the original stores managed to hang on. So here’s 8th street today or rather lately. For some reason two great places recently closed that had weathered that previous storm: Barnes & Noble and Cafetasia. Both will be missed…..
